"Down to your internet and tv connections, we'd definitely recommend contacting Esther for all your accommodation questions and needs" - Guy & Saskia, Dutch expats
As a married woman with a young daughter, my husband and I have been concerned about safety for women. Living in Chennai, whilst not a bad place to be in many ways, has its challenges, however. And we obviously want to ensure a secure and prosperous future for ourselves and our daughter. So when one of our relatives told us about Malaysia's MM2H, the country's Golden Visa, and all the goodness it offered, we delved into it immediately.
What's MM2H? It's short for the Malaysia My Second Home. It's Malaysia's a long-term visa, a Golden Visa that's extended to foreigners who want to make Malaysia their new home, whether their second or first home. Well, the visa's numerous benefits, especially the financial incentives and the generous tax breaks, made it a perfect fit for us.
Monetary Tailwinds
So, financially, the MM2H visa makes a lot of sense for us. We own a good-sized home in Chennai, which we plan to rent out. This rental cash flow, combined with the fixed income generated by our savings and investments, will allow us to live comfortably in Malaysia. Additionally, as an extra bonus, the cost of living in Malaysia is significantly lower than Chennai.
But that's still not all, because to top it off, since we're MM2H-holders, the funds we remit to Malaysia from India are exempt from any tax, courtesy of the tax privileges we're entitled to. The resulting financial freedom we enjoy means that, in practical terms, compared to our lives in Chennai, we've actually boosted our standard of living considerably. In Malaysia, we essentially live the lives of expats, even without my husband and I working full-time.
Now, both my husband and I are medical professionals and we do want to work full-time again eventually. In fact, we're confident that we'll find work easily in Malaysia. After all, Malaysia's economy is doing quite well and the country's ever-growing role as a medical services hub requires that the number of medical practitioners grows commensurately.
But the fact that English is widely spoken here is another reason we believe we'll do well. Mind you, with that being said, in all honesty, in view of Malaysia's cost of living being so much lower than Chennai, we're not in a rush to return to work full-time. Why would we? Given our current financial situation, we can easily afford to take our time settling in and adjusting to our new surroundings.
Medical Tourism
Malaysia's developed healthcare system is the main reason people come from far and wide to seek medical services of all kinds in the country. The quality of medical care versus its cost ratio is typically better than in Malaysia's surrounding neighbours, which is why, next to Singapore, Malaysia has become one of Asia's renowned medical hubs. So effectively, we can benefit twice from this; not only professionally, but also in terms of our own family's health care.
Another, somewhat more mundane aspect of Malaysia that we're looking forward to is the food. As Indians, we love our curry dishes, so we prize ourselves fortunate that Malaysia, with its rich culinary heritage, offers plenty of familiar flavours, whilst also providing plenty opportunities to try new dishes.
But better still, the presence of the large Indian community in Malaysia, comprising both locals and expats, means that we'll never feel too far from home, with plenty of Indian restaurants, temples and cultural events to enjoy.
Well, for us, Malaysia's MM2H visa has opened up a world of possibilities, that much is clear. MM2H offers us a safer, more attractive lifestyle, with a better work-life balance, in a beautiful country with a diverse multicultural culture for good measure. We're excited to have been able to get this journey started and are very, very thankful for the opportunities that the MM2H visa offers and our MM2H agent.
